Who’ll Stop the Rain?

This article in the summer 2008 edition of Eugene Living highlights the storm water features of this custom house on Tiara Street in Eugene, the first permitted residential vegetated roof in Lane County. This new 2,800 s.f. home was designed and built by Habitats, incorporating a range of sustainable design features including: passive solar design for heating and cooling; a solar water heating system, non-toxic materials and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified structural beams and decking, super insulated off-set stud framing in the North and East walls; and sustainably harvested local wood products in the finishes. 100% of all storm water is retained onsite through an integrated water filtration, retention and irrigation system. This system includes a living (vegetated) roof, cistern, gravity fed irrigation system, bioswales, storm surge pond and a drywell.
