Sheasby Residence

The site for this residence is a southwest sloping lot in Eugene OR. with a framed view of Spencers' butte. The slope, sun angles and view were the driving forces leading to a three-part design pinned together with a central fireplace / staircase around which the living spaces revolve. The result is an open, day-lit space, warmed by the sun, cooled by the breeze and connected to its surroundings through views and native materials.

The square is the primary living space and faces southeast and southwest, maximizing the hours of sunlight and framing the view to the southwest. Hip roofs with twenty-two inch overhangs provide shelter from the summer sun but allow the setting winter sun to penetrate the house, supplementing the sub-floor heating system.

The rectangle contains the garage at the north, sheltering the living space from the cold, and a double height space to the south, allowing sun and light into the core of the house while excess heat is vented out the top, between the two ends are the upstairs bedrooms. The cross bar divides the south-facing living area from the garage at the north, it also houses the entry and service areas while providing the necessary retaining wall at the ground level and decks off of the bedrooms to the east and west.
