Homes
Oldham ResidenceThe Design adds a 2200 sq. ft. home to the existing shop / apartment and creates a water management plan for the home and site. The new house reflects the design of the original apartment in the new west and east wings. These three conventional two story parts are brought together in the central living space which takes the form of a double height central structure. Its open clerestory form is inspired by the pastoral setting and the existing barn architecture on the site. This central space opens onto a wrap around deck and spills from there out on to a rammed earth patio defined by the partial enclosure the house provides. the patio is ringed with shading devices that carry solar water heating tubes and anchored by a sheltered outdoor fireplace opposite the south facade. Springs formed by roof and site run-off bubble out of stones in the patio and begin their journey through the enhanced wetland and down to the newly created pond. The pond is supplemented by a natural spring and overflow is handled by an existing channel flowing out to a large existing wetland in the valley floor. |
